In 2008, students were addressed by Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who gave important insights on both her personal choices that led to her position and on those of the government in dealing with complex issues such as the environment and sustainability. After her talk, she took time to personally talk with some of the participants.

The students then broke out into discussion streams such as food and water, gender relations and humanitarian issues. HRI Fellows from the University of Sydney conducted panels featuring key advisors and leaders from the featured areas.
